Research & Development

Through heavy investment in our R&D programme, we are at the forefront of developing the next generation of motors and pumps for the energy industry. We hold various patents for the techniques and processes we have developed in building performance critical motors and pumps for harsh environments.

Current R&D Projects:

We are constantly developing and refining the bearings on our motor stators as they are an integral component and their performance directly affects efficiency, performance and maintenance. Our motors and pumps are used in ever more challenging environments, and our goal is to exceed our industry-leading five-year service time, testing new materials in our purpose built rig designed for abrasion and sheer testing.
Electrical capability
Our internal joints meet a 25-year design life requirement and are tested and validated up to 1100 bar. We use high-speed air gap friction testing, and build customised rigs to test, model and validate new materials and applications.

CFD (Computer fluid dynamics) modelling software

We use CFD software to model heat transfer, simulate lifetime before failure and maximise hydraulics efficiency before physical testing. Our software has been most recently modelling our Value Engineered BCP hydraulic consolidation and standardisation, as well as the VE BCP electrical standards designs.

3D Printing

We have in-house 3D printing capability which allows us to test the fit, form, and function of our tooling, layouts, and our products. Using the MakerBot Replicator Z18, a model can be produced in CAD and then created in 3D PLA just minutes later, giving us the flexibility to build prototypes quickly and cost-effectively. We also use 3D printing to help teach our apprentices about design and product development.

We are developing a proof of concept for a fluid flow problem to validate our calculations with a scaled down model of a test loop in a reduced lead time. It also allows us to trial several scenarios which previously would be unheard of, allowing us to push the envelope in design and test as market leaders.
